Sunderland - Automotive City
Sunderland is continuing to prove itself as a city thriving with new investment and is upholding its status as one of the best places in the UK to live and do business. Sunderland is one of the fastest growing automotive cities in the UK - since the arrival of Nissan in 1984 and the inflow of component suppliers, more than 10,000 automotive jobs have been created in the city.
As the largest car plant in the UK, Nissan has been the cornerstone of Sunderland's economic renaissance. The plant currently manufactures the Micra, Micra C+C, Note, Qashqai and more recently the Qashqai+2 at its Sunderland site. Employing just over 5,000 people, the plant will produce 450,000 units this year.
Sustaining its reputation for inward investment, Sunderland has been named by KMPG as one of the best five places in the UK for business. It's a reputation that has been hard won over the past decade, thanks to the success of Nissan, and developments such as the Doxford International Business Park and Sunderland Enterprise Park.
More than 20 component manufacturers have set up in Sunderland, supplying not only Nissan but other plants worldwide including Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Toyota, Honda, VW, Seat and Opel.
TRW, part of the Blackstone Group, has two plants in the city. Johnson Controls, Magna Kansei and Faurecia also have a presence there, and they have recently been joined by Karmann, Lear-Tacle and Valeo.
The future looks bright too with the addition of Turbine Business Park adjacent to the Nissan site which will create 690,000 sq ft of mixed use business space and bring an additional 4,000 jobs to the city.
A key attraction for investors is the leading edge telecommunications and network facilities available. This includes the state-of-the-art e-volve Business Centre - another reason why Sunderland has been named one of the most 'IT Intelligent' communities in the world. The #8 million building, which received its first tenants last year, is a developing hub for knowledge-based information and communication technology businesses.
Underpinning this success has been the hard work of the council and its dedicated business investment team. It was a driving force behind the development of Rainton Bridge South and Doxford International - along with property developer Goodman - and works tirelessly behind the scenes to sustain a competitive business environment.
It is continuing to work in partnership with the private sector to attract fresh inward investment and create new jobs. Regeneration projects totalling more than #2 billion are currently underway, reshaping the city's landscape and helping it achieve its aim of becoming the most liveable city in the UK.
Sunderland is a large and thriving city and its workforce; academic institutions and the local council are committed to supporting the sector and helping to ensure business growth.
The City Council's award-winning Business Investment team has played a vital role in the growth of Sunderland's automotive sector. The team is committed to delivering a professional and efficient service to inward investors, and provides assistance with:
- availability of land and premises;
- financial incentives available from the City Council and other sources;
- contacts at companies already located in the city;
- labour availability and cost;
- communication links - road, rail, air, sea, telecommunications;
- quality of life in the city - house prices, leisure, education and health care.
